Dear CAA Introduction to Snow Avalanche Mapping participants,
Welcome to the Canadian Avalanche Association’s Introduction to Snow Avalanche Mapping (Mapping) course.
The CAA Mapping course places a high degree of emphasis on technical knowledge, the importance of standard and reliable observational techniques, sound data collection, and the ability to work safely in mountainous terrain.
Preparation is key to success on this course and this webpage is provided to help you be successful. Students that are well prepared with the necessary equipment, basic knowledge and mountain travel skills will benefit everyone by allowing us to conduct the course in the most efficient and effective manner possible.
Besides the mailed student resource package this will be the only written correspondence from the CAA regarding your course. Please contact the CAA directly (250-837-2435) if you have any questions.

Pre-course preparation checklist
- Check this page again 2 weeks prior to course start date.
- You will be mailed a package containing a variety of resources. Please come to course having completed the mandatory pre-course assignments and readings found under the “Pre-Course Assignments and Reading” tab of your student manual.
- Become familiar with the Snow Avalanche Management in Forested Terrain publication, available online from the BC government website, as well as the Technical Aspects of Snow Avalanche Risk Management document (a hard copy will be provided during the course).
- This course uses some trigonometry and students are expected to arrive to the course familiar with basic trig formulae. There are many trigonometry apps available on the web which may prove helpful. Example: iTunes apple trig-solver.
- Until you receive your student manual, please refer to your online registration confirmation email for a view-only link to the manual.

Equipment List
Students on this course must be fit and experienced in summer backcountry travel. Be prepared for some bushwhacking in run-out zones, long days and wet Fall weather. An equipment list outlines what you will need to bring with you to the course. Students who are well prepared with the necessary equipment and basic knowledge will benefit everyone by allowing us to conduct the course’s daily sessions in the most efficient and effective manner possible.

Sample Schedule
Transportation
Students are responsible for their own transportation to and from the course location and field trip sites. Carpooling is only recommended for students who are from the same household. Drive times can be up to 1.5 hours one-way and the course can cover up to 700 km.
Accommodation
There are a lot of options for accommodation in Nelson. You can visit Tourism Nelson for information on local hostels, hotels, motels, campgrounds, and B & B’s.
