Dear CAA Avalanche Operations Level 3 participants,

Welcome to the Canadian Avalanche Association’s Applied Avalanche Risk Management course.

The Level 3 is designed to teach students concepts of risk that will help them create a risk management framework for use in practical applications in snow avalanche risk management and operations.

Students are expected to come well prepared to the course, having completed the mandatory pre-readings in the student manual.  The Level 3 course combines theory and practical experience, and is delivered in both lecture and team exercise format. The lessons are designed to challenge your thinking, and students will be encouraged to contribute perspectives from their avalanche forecasting and risk management backgrounds, together with the knowledge gained from the pre-readings.

Besides the mailed student resource package this will be the only written correspondence from the CAA regarding your course. Please contact the CAA directly (250-837-2435) if you have any questions.

Below you will find pertinent information for your course. Take the time to read it carefully.

We wish you well on your travels this winter and success during your course.

Sincerely,

Andrea Lustenberger

Industry Training Program Manager

Pre-course preparation checklist

  • Check this page again 2 weeks prior to course start date.
  • You will be mailed a package containing a variety of resources. We recommend students begin the readings in the student manual right away as they are very technical in nature; they will require a couple of sessions to get through.
  • Until you receive your student manual, please refer to your online registration confirmation email for a view-only link to the manual.
  • Students are expected to have their own copy of the Avalanche Handbook.
  • It is strongly recommended that students purchase:
    • Stephen, G. Vicks, Degrees of Belief – Subjective Probability and Engineering Judgment, however, the specified pages from Vick’s book will be included in the pre-course materials.
    • Planning Methods for Assessing and Mitigating Snow Avalanche Risk - can be obtained in a hard copy or digital version from the CAA online store.
  • Be familiar with the Technical Aspects of Snow Avalanche Risk Management (TASARM) guidelines. This will be distributed at the course

Snacks and any specific hydration needs should be organized in advance and brought to class. There is a lunch break but depending on the course location it is prudent to bring a lunch due to time constraints and food store options.
