To be or not to be….a reference: Filling in a Prior Learning Assessment reference form is a serious responsibility.
Applicants for Prior Learning Assessment(PLA) are submitting their employment and non-CAA training to be assessed against CAA courses. References play a large part in validating the applicants statement and skills. Please think about how well you know the applicant and be candid and honest in your assessment. The applicant will not see this form as references will be kept confidential.
Before filling out your reference letter you should have received from the applicant their self-assessment. If you have not received this please stop here and be in contact with the applicant.
Take a look at the CAA's course DACUM (goals and objectives) for the course the applicant wishes to PLA. CAA DACUMs can be found under the 'Program Goals' tab of the specific course under the Training tab on the CAA Website.
For PLA's you can:
1) WAIVE: An applicant has equivalent training/experience that meets a required prerequisite for a CAA course. Example: The Introduction to Weather prerequisite for the Avalanche Operations Level 2 course.
If successful the applicant will not need to take the CAA prerequisite course.
2) EQUIVALENCY: An applicant has equivalent training/experience to a CAA course that they would like to be recognized for and awarded a CAA course certificate.
