Dear Instructional Skills Workshop (ISW) participants,

The ISW is offered within a small group setting and is designed to enhance the teaching effectiveness of both new and experienced educators. During the 3-day workshop, participants design and conduct three “mini-lessons” and receive verbal, written and video feedback from the other participants who have been learners in the mini-lessons. Using an intensive experiential learning approach, participants are provided with information on the theory and practice of teaching adult learners, the selection and writing of useful learning objectives with accompanying lesson plans, techniques for eliciting learner participation, and suggestions for evaluation of learning.

The workshop encourages reflection and examination of one’s teaching practices with feedback focused on the learning process rather than on the specific content of the lesson. Effective feedback skills, practised in the workshop, are useful for educators in the classroom and also as they conduct their regular institutional business. 

COURSE/LEARNING OUTCOMES
By the end of the course, participants will:

  1. use instructional objectives to inform learners about what they are expected to learn
  2. write a useful, practical lesson plan
  3. evaluate what has been learned in relation to the performance objectives
  4. use simple techniques during the lessons to test teaching
  5. conduct a highly participatory classroom session
  6. use the common instructional aids (e.g. chalkboard, flip chart, overhead projector and screen)
  7. use good questioning techniques during a classroom session
  8. give objective feedback

Given the learning outcomes, this 3-day workshop is full and intense. What you get out of it is in direct proportion to the time you spend preparing.

Pre-course preparation checklist

  • Check this page again 2 weeks prior to workshop start date.
  • You will be e-mailed a package containing a variety of resources, review each attachment carefully.
  • Please arrive to course having fully prepared a lesson for the first day and lessons roughly prepared for Day 2 + 3 (refer to the Handbook for details)
  • Familiarize yourself with the Instructional Skills Workshop - Handbook.

  • Bring a personal laptop and/or USB Memory Stick.
