Avalanche Control Blasting (ACB) provides essential training in the safe application of explosives in avalanche control. With the generous assistance of WorkSafeBC, the CAA has brought together leading explosives and avalanche industry experts to design this course.
This two-day course is appropriate for new practitioners and for those requiring an update on current best practices. It covers industry-endorsed procedures for hand charge, cornice, helicopter, and Avalauncher missions; and addresses federal and provincial government regulations on explosives use in avalanche control.
This course does not certify students. For more information on WorkSafeBC Blasting Certification, visit WorkSafeBC. See below for further information.

Equipment, Logistics, and Materials
Students will be mailed a program package that includes the CAA ACB course manual, the WSBC Blasters Handbook, a set of pre-course questions to complete, and course readings. It is the student's responsibility to contact the CAA office if they have not received this package one month prior to course start.
Pre-course readings take about 15 hours and must be completed prior to starting the course. The student manual is very dry and contains terms, procedures, and policies. Students will find they cannot read through it in one sitting.
This is a classroom-based course. Bring a pen and paper or laptop for note-taking during the presentations. A raincoat and outdoor shoes are recommended for the site visit.
Transportation
Students are responsible for their own transportation to and from the course and field locations.
Course Evaluation
There is a written evaluation component to the blasting course. A passing mark of 70% must be obtained on the final exam for the student to attain a certificate of completion.
