Avalanche Operations Level 2 - changes in winter 2020/21

Avalanche Search & Rescue Advanced Skills and the Practical Skills Assessment

Based on student and instructor feedback, the AvSAR Advanced Skills (AvSAR) course and Practical Skills Assessment have been combined and will now be offered as a four-day course. As a result, students will only need to register for the AvSAR course, where they will be assessed on both AvSAR theory and technical skills. Click here to learn more.

For those students who have not yet completed the Practical Skills Assessment portion of their AvSAR training, additional assessment days have been tacked on to specific AvSAR courses throughout the 2019-20 season. Check the 2019-20 Course Schedule for details.

Avalanche Operations Level 1 Online Course

This message is to inform you of important changes to the Avalanche Operations Level 1 course. As of Summer 2019, those wishing to take an Avalanche Operations Level 1 course will be required to complete an online prerequisite called Introduction to Avalanche Operations.

Avalanche Operations Level 2: Important Info

Due to increasing demand for the Avalanche Operations Level 2 program, new application requirements are coming. Check back in September 2018 for full information.

Future Level 2 applicants please note that all Level 2 prerequisite courses (Introduction to Weather and the Avalanche Search and Rescue Advanced Skills Theory, and Avalanche Search and Rescue Practical Skills Assessment) must be COMPLETED prior to applying for the Level 2 program. This means that if you intend to apply for the Level 2 program for the 2019-20 winter season, you will need to complete prerequisite courses by April 2019.

Applications for the 2019-20 season of Level 2 courses will be accepted September 1^st, 2018 to April 30^th, 2019.

Registration for the Introduction to Weather and AvSAR course open June 20th, 2018. For more information on registration, please contact Audrey Defant, Student Services.

Bernie Protsch - The Man, The Legend

Whistler Blackcomb Honours 40 Years of Service to Bernie Protsch.

His career spans the expansion of the ski areas to include gondolas, high speed quads and many rescues. This spring the resort recognized his four decades of dedicated service.
Said Protch: "It's gone by fast."

ISSW Grant Recipient Announcement

Avalanche Canada Foundation's ISSW Fund

Arienne Hanna is this year's recipient of the Fund. Arienne plans to pursue graduate studies in snow science and eventually work in structural avalanche mitigation.

The ISSW Fund supports projects and people who are professionally engaged in avalanche safety, forecasting and research in Canada. The fund promotes the ISSW motto of “A Merging of Theory and Practice”, and aims to develop crossover between the practice of avalanche forecasting and the science of avalanche research.

BC Coroners Report: Winter Activity Deaths

BC Coroners Service has released WINTER ACTIVITY DEATHS IN BRITISH COLUMBIA 2007/2008 – 2015/2016. This report examines accidental winter activity deaths. Not exclusively focused on avalanche deaths, the report helps place avalanche deaths in context relative to other winter deaths.
